There are many different vaccines for Overeating Disease (Enterotoxemia) in sheep and many, like Essential 3+T from Colorado Serum, include the tetanus vaccine in addition to vaccine for Clostridium Perfringens Type C & D. Of the available vaccines this was our favorite and we give it an enthusiastic 5 stars for several reasons:
- It’s great that it comes in a small bottle with only a few doses … this allows small hobby farmers to order one small bottle each year, reduce waste and be sure that they’re always administering a fresh vaccine.
- While there’s always a risk of a lump or bump forming when you administer a CDT vaccine, we found (and other reviewers on other sites agree) that Essential 3+T from Colorado Serum rarely results in lumps, bumps or sores at the injection site. This is great for any animal, but it’s especially great for show lambs.
- It works – while treating our livestock with Essential 3+T we didn’t lose a single lamb or adult sheep to Overeating Disease or Tetanus.
It’s important for shepherds to remember that Overeating Disease can affect any sheep that hasn’t been vaccinated so annual vaccinations are the responsibility of any shepherd. If affected by enterotoxemia, sheep can die within 24 hours and treatment is recognized as having limited success so whether you choose to vaccinate with Essential 3+T or another brand, be sure to do so.
